DIY Planning

Planning the task ahead can save time, money and, maybe even your health. Although some advice is obvious we are often tempted to by-pass it, so to refresh your memory:

  1. More haste means less speed. Give yourself plenty of time to complete the job. If you start to run out of time, don’t be tempted to work faster or take short cuts. Fatigue is a common factor in many accidents, so it is often best to give yourself a break.

  2. Follow instructions to the letter. Read instructions and warnings carefully, particularly if you are using a piece of equipment for the first time. Make sure the manuals are up to date because equipment changes all the time.

  3. Don't take on jobs that are too difficult. If a job is beyond you, call in a professional. Showing off is worthless if you end up in hospital.

  4. Use the right tools for the job. Avoid 'making do' with alternative equipment. Choose the correct tools and protective equipment for the job. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery and tie back any long hair.
